Hope in a World of Despair

Talk to many people in America nowadays and it won’t take long before the conversation turns to despair.  Maybe it’s the pessimistic world we live in, but people love to perpetuate the idea that things are going downhill fast.  They’ve lost faith in government, lost faith in the economy, maybe have even lost faith in the church.  All this negativity just bums me out and I don’t want to listen any more.

hope1As a Christian, we have no reason to wallow in despair for we have a hope beyond measure.  “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!  In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade- kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Peter 1:3-5).

Hold your head up high fellow follower of the one and only true God. There is no time for despair.  Our Savior has defeated death and our inheritance awaits.

  1. I think much of our despair comes from our attachment to the world. The world is falling apart but the Kingdom of God is coming together. As our hope becomes tied to the Lord and untethered from the world we will find refreshing.

Amen to that. We were never meant to be comfortable here. We are aliens in a strange land, waiting for our true home. When we rest in the hope of our arrival there, despair easily takes a back seat.

That’s right. The hope God gives us and the love he showers us with enables us to live without fear. If the world falls apart around us that love and hope will never fade.

I agree with the first commenter. It is satan’s kingdom that is falling apart. We are witnesses to it. A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. As we watch its fall, we have to encourage ourselves in the Lord as David did so that when we meet people who want to get out of the despair, we can be of service to them. There are many who just don’t understand and desperately want something to hope for. As satan’s kingdom comes apart, God’s kingdom is coming together. It may not always seem that way, but surely it is happening. Let God’s people find encouragement and let their light shine!
