“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Jesus spoke those words to the men who were crucifying him! I don’t know about you, but I can’t even imagine being able to forgive the very people who are killing me. It’s hard for me to envision having no bitterness towards those who have wronged me. But that’s exactly what Jesus asks us to do (Luke 6:27-31, 37). Our forgiveness from God is even contingent on our ability to forgive others (Matthew 6:14-15).
We live with enough bitterness and rage in the world around us. We could simply look at the divorce rate in our country to know that there’s not much forgiveness happening. God has set the perfect example by forgiving us through Jesus (Ephesians 4:32). Forgiving our fellow man is a powerful way to glorify God and let the light of his Son Jesus shine in the world around us.
