“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade- kept in heaven for you.”
(1 Peter 1:3-4)
I find the idea of an inheritance from God very exciting. Our Creator and Father shares with us the family fortune. But this gift is unlike any inheritance we could receive here on earth. Our eternal inheritance is priceless! It is pure! It is perfect! So what do we get with this inheritance?
1 Thessalonians 5:9-10: “For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or are asleep, we may live together with him.” (We get to live together with God forever. Although our inheritance includes more than this, the simple fact that we spend eternity in the presence of God is more than we could ever imagine.)
1 John 3:1-2: “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” (More than anything, our goal each day should be for us to emulate Christ more and more. When we receive our inheritance, we will be completely remade to be like Christ. There will be no more imperfection.)
1 Corinthians 3:8: “The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each one will be rewarded according to his own labor.” (We will be rewarded for our service for God. Here on earth we may do things that go unnoticed or unappreciated. But God will reward those who diligently serve him.)
Revelation 21:4: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (We will be freed from all that ails us here in this life. Hurt, pain, suffering, and persecution will cease to exist as we reside in perfection.)
Romans 8:17: “Now if we are children, then we are heirs- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.” (While here on earth, our mission is to glorify God in all that we do. But in heaven, we will share in the glory of Christ and be held high as heirs alongside him.)
When faced with the difficulties of this world, just remember the inheritance that awaits those who persevere. It’s a gift that cannot be destroyed. It cannot lose value like your retirement portfolio. It is permanent and protected. Trust in God’s promise. He never fails to come through on his word!
