The Shift

“So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.  They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.  Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.”

(Ephesians 4:17-19)

Do not walk as the world walks!  We are to separate ourselves from the world and its fruitful deeds of darkness (Ephesians 5:11).  In other words, we are to make a shift from worldly living to godly living.  What does this worldly living look like that we should stay away from:

  1. The Gentile’s lives are lived in the futility of their thinking- vs.17. (The aims of man are pointless and have no lasting effect other than to serve their own needs.)
  2. The Gentiles are darkened in their understanding- vs. 18.  (The faulty wisdom of man breeds arrogance and rebellion towards God.)
  3. The Gentiles have lost all sensitivity- vs. 19.  (Worldly man becomes callous and hardhearted to what is right.  All impurity is craved and their lust is never satisfied.)

DHP88D1428494958How can we make a shift from worldly living to Godly living:

  1. Be imitators of God (Eph. 4:32-5:2)
  2. Live a life of love (John 13:34-35)
  3. Learn what pleases God (Eph. 5:10)
  4. Expose sin (Eph. 5:11-14)
  5. Follow the will of God (Eph. 5:17-21)

As Christians, we cannot fight off temptation from this world unless we’re willing to make a shift away from the way the world does things.  And the best way to do that is to surround ourselves with God’s word, daily learning his will for our lives.
