“Caution: Stay clear of any teacher, preacher, or anyone else who encourages you to do something, read something, or say something to harness the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit’s power cannot be harnessed. His power cannot be used to accomplish anything other than the Father’s will. He is not a candy dispenser. He is not a vending machine. He is not a genie waiting for someone to make wishes. He is holy God.
People who are always looking for a way to direct or control the power of the Holy Spirit are confused. The Holy Spirit was sent to control us. He is not available to do our bidding. He is looking for surrendered believers to do his work. Notice what Jesus said, ‘You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth’ (Acts 1:8).
The power of the Holy Spirit was given for a specific purpose-to enable us to be effective witnesses for Jesus Christ”
(Charles Stanley- “The Spirit-Filled Life”)
This is a pretty powerful reminder that when we come to God, we are coming to serve Him and his purposes. We are coming to offer our lives to Him is gratitude for his grace and mercy. Somehow, Christians have learned that God is some figure meant to serve us and our every desire for a happy and abundant life. But Jesus promised us the indwelling of the Holy Spirit for his work and pleasure, not ours. When we are surrendered to the influence of the Spirit, we will see his fruit (Galatians 5:22-23) manifested in our lives and through that, our ability to be a light in a dark world around us will grow. As the quote above says, be very wary of those who would say that God is there just to meet our needs. While he does that, it is also our responsibility to offer him a surrendered life. Submit yourselves to the control of the Holy Spirit and just watch the amazing things God will do for this world through you.
